In practice, it’s not always easy to stay active enough. We’re often stuck at our desks in a seated position for work. After a long day, it’s tempting to collapse on the couch rather than go for a walk. Whether you’re naturally sporty or more of a binge-watcher, there are always ways to add more movement to your day without it feeling like a chore. With the tips below, you’ll get your body moving and boost your overall well-being!
- Take the stairs more often
It may sound obvious, but skipping the elevator and taking the stairs is perhaps the easiest way to add movement to your day. Do you work in an office building and take the elevator every day? Try the stairs from time to time. Is your office on the sixth floor? Then get off a few floors early and walk the rest! It’s a great way to strengthen your legs and boost circulation throughout your body.
- Walk during phone calls
Do you have to make phone calls regularly for work? Stand up and walk around while talking. Just be mindful not to disturb your focused coworkers as you pace. Walking while talking adds light movement to your day with minimal effort!
- Make movement a habit
Humans are creatures of habit. Have you tried building movement into your daily routine? Stretch after waking up, do a few lunges next to your bed, or take a short walk after lunch. Even doing some squats while brushing your teeth can make a difference. These small movements can have a big impact over time.
- Set movement reminders
There are many tech tools like smartwatches or pedometers to help track your activity. Need a little push? Turn on push notifications to remind yourself to move. After three nudges, you might just get up from your chair!
- Choose active transportation
This tip might not be feasible for everyone, but it’s worth mentioning. Try biking instead of driving, or get off public transport a stop early. Is your commute under 10 km? Take the bike on a sunny day! Running an errand nearby? Walk or cycle instead of driving.
- Play more
If you have children or active pets, try playing with them more often. It may sound silly, but throwing a ball for your dog is a fun and active way to move—plus your furry friend will love it. Or why not join the kids for a game of tag?
- Try “deskercises”
Do you spend several hours a day at your desk? Engage your core while typing, roll your shoulders now and then to release tension, or stretch your legs under your desk. These small efforts count too!
- Listen to your body
Probably the most important tip: listen to your body. You’re not always going to be at your best, and that’s okay! The key is to find a form of movement that suits you and feels good. Sometimes, a short walk is all it takes to feel better.
