Supplements during pregnancy: what does your body really need?

Pregnancy is one of the most special periods in life. Your body changes, you feel new life growing—and at the same time, you want to do everything you can to give that new life the best possible start. Eating healthy, getting enough rest, quitting smoking or alcohol: that goes without saying. But did you know that certain dietary supplements also play a key role in your baby’s development?

In this blog, you’ll discover which supplements can truly make a difference during pregnancy—and why.

Folic acid: essential for early development

Folic acid (vitamin B11) is perhaps the most well-known supplement for pregnant women—and rightly so. It’s crucial for the early development of your baby’s nervous system and reduces the risk of neural tube defects like spina bifida.

Advice: start taking 400 micrograms of folic acid daily as soon as you begin trying to conceive, and continue at least until 8 weeks after conception. It remains beneficial beyond that, especially during breastfeeding, as it supports red blood cell formation and liver function.

Vitamin D: strong bones and good immunity

During pregnancy, your need for vitamin D increases. It not only supports your baby’s bone development but also contributes to the immune system of both mother and child. Since this vitamin is hard to obtain through food alone, supplementation is recommended.

Recommended dose: 3000 IU (75 micrograms) per day. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if in doubt.

Omega-3 fatty acids: building blocks for brain and eyes

The fatty acids EPA and DHA—mainly found in oily fish—are essential for the development of your baby’s brain, eyes, and nervous system. DHA contributes to cognitive development, while EPA helps balance fatty acids and has a calming effect.

Not a fan of fish? Choose a pure fish oil, krill oil, or plant-based algae oil supplement. These are safe, tested for contaminants, and suitable during pregnancy.

Royal jelly: extra support for the mother

Pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding—it’s demanding on your body. Royal jelly is a natural source of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids and supports energy levels, immunity, and recovery. It helps combat fatigue and may even reduce the risk of postnatal depression.

Pre- and probiotics: for a healthy start

Your baby’s gut flora begins to develop during pregnancy. A balanced microbiome is vital for a strong immune system—even later in life. In cases of C-section or formula feeding, imbalances are more likely. That’s why taking pre- and probiotics during pregnancy can help support both your microbiota and your baby’s.

Finally: nutrition as the foundation, supplements as support

A healthy and varied diet remains the foundation during pregnancy. But due to increased nutritional needs and nutrient loss through food processing and storage, your body may benefit from extra support. The right supplements help your baby develop optimally—and take care of your own health, too.
